Chronologically, the middle ages are long time past. Psychologically, they are very much alive in the families with narcissists at the helm, flying their flags of extreme entitlement. No matter how old you are, what you have achieved, or believe about yourself", I am ultimately in charge of your life." They take their own course. In medieval times in feudal Europe, property was owned by a lord who had complete authority over his entire domain, including all of its inhabitants. Narcissists rule their fiefdoms---spouses, children, siblings, friends---with uninterrupted power and intimidation. Every one in his domain must obey the narcissist perfectly or they will be harshly punished or banished from the kingdom. The narcissist controls the reins of power and dictates to all of his/her subjects exactly what is expected of them.
Children of narcissists have a particularly painful time. From birth the only person in authority has been the authoritarian lord, the narcissist. By threat, stealth, a system of rewards and punishments, he has caused his children to cower before him. No one who is raised by a narcissist gets away without some level of psychological damage. Some children are compliant and go along with this parent, always fearful of sudden overwhelming punishment. Others live in secret, hiding from the narcissist as much and as often as they can. Then, there are children who are chosen and highly prized who will be molded into narcissists. They run rough shod over their siblings, with no rules given and no conscience to guide them. The other siblings suffer uncounted cruelties as a result of the reign of terror conducted by narcissistic siblings. I have heard many life stories of merciless acts at the hands of narcissistic siblings.
