Living and partnering with a narcissistic man or woman lingers in the mind and heart for so many people with whom I communicate. They have given themselves to the narcissist, completely, believing that this individual is sincere and worthy of their love and loyalty. They are unable to see through the shiny false self of the narcissist that is so attractive, magnetic and adventuresome and who makes all of the promises we are waiting to hear. Most of us want to believe the narcissist. His act is so smooth, so seductive and compelling. We are swept away by his or her irresistible personal vibration. And if he is very successful to boot and has mastered the tools of power, how can we turn around and walk away from him (her). 

The timing is unknown but what is certain is that the narcissist is will turn very ugly---making outrageous demands, cruel comments, veiled threats, empty accusations, explosive temper tantrums, etc.  The elaborate false mask that the narcissist uses to fool the world is torn off in private. Here we see the ruthless fury of the real self of the narcissist that strikes at those closest to him. He or she is without mercy, pulling out all of stops of rage and retribution, making his spouse, partner and children fearful, apprehensive, confused---absolutely miserable. His words are crushing, cruel, humiliating. The narcissist revels in inflicting psychological pain. 

Many spouses of narcissists decide that they can no longer compromise their lives  They have decided that they have given too much of themselves. There are those who feel that they have nothing left---the narcissist has taken too much from them. I am hearing from former spouses of narcissists who make a courageous unwavering stand. They move forward, sever their relationship with the narcissistic spouse, despite the complexities of this process to create a victorious life. They are saying that this is possible and it is never too late to be true to your unique destiny. They learn about every aspect of the narcissistic personality disorder, gather the strength and stamina waiting in reserve and create a life that is rich with creativity, affection, spontaneity, boundless hope, contagious adventure of mind and spirit and a discovery of inner peace that the world cannot give.
