Emotionally Distant Narcissistic Fathers

Download | Duration: 00:03:52

The narcissistic man who biologically fathers children is not able to love and nurture them.  With a narcissistic character structure, he is constantly searching for narcissistic supplies---praise, adulation, worldly achievements that will bring him monetary, business and social status. Having a child is very secondary to his intersts and goals. The narcissist in many ways is a child himself, a very demanding one, who obsessively seeks to have his outrageous needs met, no mattter who else suffers, including his spouse and children

Adult children of narcissists describe their fathers as cold, controlling, demanding and emotionally distant. One apt comment was: "Getting my father's love was like squeezing water out of a rock." Narcissistic men cannot father. They are psychologically empty, incapable of giving any emotinal sustenance, affection or guidance to their chidlren. Children of narcissists learn that they must grieve the loss of not having a real father, accept and be grateful for the love they received from their mother or other family members and move forward with their lives. Many of these individuals benefit from good psychotherapy, spiritual practices and other healing modalities.
