Narcissists take psychological advantage of their spouses. Many spouses believe that that the narcissist's constant demands and verbal abuse are just part of the program when you are married to a person who is highly successful and self entitled. Form many narcissists it is financially more beneficial to ttehm to stay legally married than to disrupt and deplete their resources. While the narcissist leads a life of freedom the non-narcissistic spouse is psychologically trapped in a non-marriage devoid of love, intimacy or empathy. Some spouses after much abuse and years of trying to change the narcissist, change themselves. They evolve and recreate their lives one step at a time. I am no longer trapped, but will bide my time...until the right time so that I can leave. I'm sure my husband realizes taht he has little affect on me now, his cover is blown and I've seen beneath the mask. So, his contempt for me is even greater. Perhaps I'm in his "discarding" phase...but I say 'what a blessing'. I'd love for him to think he made the decision to move on and not me. They're all about control, afterall. Regardless, this is a union that will be no more. I put 6 years into it...it has been trying. Ironically, he believes he is extremely nice to me despite the humiliating, despicable names he calls me, or the constant demands, rules, orders, critiques on my performance with his orders, etc. He is literally almost intolerable from the moment he awakes. His sole purpose seems to be to annoy me or cause me extreme stress. He's really kind of pathetic, laughable now that his affect on me has lessened. It's like he is scrambling to find anything that will cause a reaction, and when he can't get it, he just withers up. What pathetic creatures they really are. They don't exist unless they are causing misery or destruction. I often wonder at what point, what age he lost his soul. It was his mother that caused this.
