Paranoia is an overwhelming global fear that others are trying to harm or destroy us. Although the narcissist has an image of total self confidence and success, his inner world is tormented by anticipated attacks by real and perceived enemies. The narcissist trusts no one, not even a spouse of many decades. The narcissist expends a lot of energy, time and money planning how he will get back at those who will pull him down or destroy him. The narcissist's world beneath the mask is dangerous and bleak---beneath all the bravado, grandiosity and extreme self entitlement is a deep seated fear of annihilation---paranoia.     The irony! They fear annihilation yet they destroy others on a daily basis, with their words, constant demands, humiliations and lack of gratitude. They are paranoid, and yet they evade the space of others to the point that their victim becomes paranoid, unnerved, and stressed.
