Those who are included in the highly successful and prominent narcissist's inner circle are required to pay him or her homage at all times. Although they may be bright and talented themselves, the narcissist places himself above everyone---even God. The narcissist designs specific roles for those encircled by his light. They supply him with the ego satisfactions and constant  adulation that he demands. Some of these members are spouses, lovers, confidantes ; others satisfy his needs to expand his power and reach in the world.  They are rainmakers and well connected in business, the art world, entertainment, media, medicine, law, politics. 

It is surprising that close  followers of the narcissist, despite their intelligence and worldly sophistication, attach themselves to a psychological predator. Members of the golden circle may benefit from having their names closely associated with the high level narcissist for business and social reasons. But there is a downside.  The narcissist demands that they be perpetually available to hold court with him at any time.
